The UK Foreign Office has included an additional eleven further destinations to its official alert list regarding the dangers of methanol toxicity from contaminated alcoholic drinks.

This revised travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the incidence of documented incidents" of methanol contamination.

Just a few weeks ago, authorities had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, in response to several notable incidents including the tragic death of six tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being warned that even tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can lead to blindness or loss of life within 12 to 48 hrs.

Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Used?

Methanol is a poisonous industrial alcohol often utilized in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and paint solvent. It is not designed for human consumption.

Although it is naturally produced during the creation of spirits, commercial firms lower it to minimal, harmless amounts for ingestion through the refining procedure.

Yet in some countries, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to save money, and since it is flavorless and smell-free, it is impossible to notice.

Authorities' Recommendations for Tourists

Government minister Hamish Falconer stated that each tourist should be aware of the signs of industrial alcohol contamination.

"If you're consuming alcohol in foreign countries, stick to well-known venues and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or free shots," Falconer advised.

"Should anything feels off, such as a hangover that's way worse than typical or sight issues – contact a doctor right away."

The complete list of destinations noted as posing a risk of toxic alcohol poisoning currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
