We present a test for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard body horror, but within Together resides a deep examination about our choices in loving our partners.
An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.
The plot starts when the couple transition from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Paranormal Spark
While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.
The entire film is a methodically building of scares, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.
Complex Characterizations
A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.
The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
The couple confront the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.
Allegory and Meaning
While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake today.
Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
