Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
